On February 4, 1985, the Session
of The First and Franklin Street Presbyterian Church VOTED to adopt the following
"Pro-Choice" policy statement: In harmony with Church principles, The First
and Franklin Street Presbyterian Church affirms that women should have full religious
freedom and freedom of personal choice concerning the completion or termination of their
pregnancies.
Because each faith group approaches the issue of abortion from the unique perspective
of its own theology, citizens of the United States hold widely varying viewpoints as to
whether abortion is morally justified. This plurality of beliefs leads us to the
conviction that the abortion decision must remain with the individual, to be made on the
basis of conscience and personal religious principles, and free from government
interference.
