Christian Education
The Protestant Faith has always always emphasized the importance of learning about our God, Jesus Christ, our community, and ourselves. We learn during Worship, Sunday School classes for Adults and children, and through study groups. We also encourage individual study.
Continuing Education for Adults
Adult Forum
Held every Sunday morning in Backus House at 9:15 (next door to our sanctuary building), we meet to read, discuss, and apply the Scriptures to our lives and to the city of Baltimore. Led by clergy and members alike, the conversations are rich and encouraging.
Lenten Studies
During the Season of Lent, group Bible study is held in small covenant study groups that meet to explore the richness of the Season and the promise of the Easter Season to come.
After Church Events
Periodically there are events following worship that feature lunch and a distinguished speaker. Past speakers include The Rev. Brian McClaren, pastor and author, The Rev. Dr. Barbara Wheeler, President of Auburn Theological Seminary, and The Rev. Dr. Marva Dawn, noted clergyperson and author.
On occasion there are unique opportunities for learning .
Educational Opportunities for Children
Children's Ministry
During each Sunday service, children are welcome in the Backus House nursery for engaging and fruitful Biblical instruction, crafts, and stories.
Confirmation Classes
For children of the discerning age who wish to join the church community, Confirmation classes are held on a schedule that is convenient for the child and their parents. Instruction is based around the PCUSA's Confirmation curriculum and is led by one or more Elders at First and Franklin over the course of several weeks. These classes are culminated in the official confirmation of the children.
